That Alice, She Sure Gets Around

In the last few months, I've tried on the Alice in Autumn Sweater Coat several different times, in several different colors but for some reason, never felt the urge to bring her home with me. Sure she was cute, comfortable, and perfect for the winter season, but it just wasn't love. Then last week, during my post 30 for 30 shopping spree, I saw her pop back up on my wish list and decided that I wanted to give her another chance, so I added a red one to my cart and waited for her arrival.

Well she got here a few days ago and readers, I didn't want to take her off once I put her on! Maybe it was the horrible fitting room mirrors that made me doubt her or the fact that I like red more now that it's Christmas time...I don't know...I'm just glad I snatched one up in my size when I did because they're all sold out now. And you know what makes me love her even more? The fact that I got her for $59.95 (I got a PA on her today)!

So what's the first thing you do when you get a sweater coat that you're in love with? Create a whole bunch of different looks with her of course! And that's what I did :) I'll warn you...some of these looks worked and some...not so much, but I wanted to show you all of them so that you could see everything that I tried. I only paired her with skirts for this post, but definitely plan on doing this again with dresses. Let's get started!

Look 1-I love mustard yellow and red together (even though they do remind me of ketchup and mustard), so this was an obvious pairing for me. I wanted a simple white blouse on top, but I'm not sure the one I chose is simple enough. I'd probably wear a solid white blouse next time so that there's not too much going on up top. My initial thought was to wear my favorite mustard yellow wedges with this outfit because they really bring out the color of the polka dots and add a bright pop of color to the look, but I also like how the brown heels bring all of the focus to this beautiful skirt, rather than straight to the shoes. Of all the looks, this one is probably my favorite :)

Alice with brown shoes:

Top: Anthropologie Blue Book Blouse
Skirt: Anthropologie Peppered and Striped Skirt
Sweater: Anthropologie Alice in Autumn Sweater Coat
Tights: Forever 21
Shoes: Anthropologie Flaxen Wedges; Anthropologie Rensselaer T-Straps

Look 2-This look was much cuter in my head that I think it is in real life. I think the colors of the blouse are just too harsh against this light colored skirt. It needs to be paired with a solid, darker colored skirt, maybe in red, brown, or navy. I chose red heels and dark tights to bring out the red tones and dark patches in the blouse and I do like them with each piece separately, just not as a whole. I like the look of Alice in the last two pictures with this skirt/heels/tights, they just need a different top to go with them next time.

Top: Anthropologie Bianka Blouse
Skirt: Anthropologie White Noise Skirt
Tights: Kohl's
Shoes: Target
Sweater: Anthropologie Alice in Autumn Sweater Coat

Look 3-This outfit is another one of my favorites :) I love this skirt because you can pair just about any bright colored cardigan/accessories with it and it works because it's a neutral. The options are endless! I love how the red sweater coat really pops against the neutral top/skirt, but at the same time, your eye is still drawn to the detailing on the skirt. I definitely wouldn't wear this outfit outside with no tights in this weather, but I might wear it for Christmas Eve dinner at my house or when other family members come over to open gifts. Or you could just throw on a pair of black tights and change into a colorful pair of shoes and you're set for a more casual work holiday party or date night with the hubby :)

Top: Anthropologie Daring Darts Blouse
Skirt: Anthropologie Lost Time Skirt
Sweater: Anthropologie Alice in Autumn Sweater Coat
Belt: Anthropologie Gift Bow Belt
Shoes: Target

Look 4-This is another one of my favorite skirts, but you'd never know it since I hardly ever wear it. It's just too short for work, even with tights and I always seem to pass right by it in my closet on the weekends. It's very easy to style since it's covered in colorful hot air balloons and I love the bubble hem because it gives the skirt a unique shape that none of the other skirts in my closet have.

I decided to pair the skirt with a red top this time around since it's the holiday season, but I'm not loving how the red color of the top looks next to the red of Alice. They're the same color, but not. It would look better if the neckline on the top was lower because then you wouldn't even see it. Other than that, I love the sweater paired with this skirt, the grey tights, and the black mary janes!

Top: Anthropologie Curated Tee
Skirt: Anthropologie Montgolfier Skirt
Tights: LOFT
Shoes: Target
Sweater: Anthropologie Alice in Autumn Sweater Coat

I hope these looks gave you some ideas on how to wear your Alice :)

  2. I love the look with the Lost Time Skirt the best, although, I really like all the ways you wore it with. This really makes me want to give this sweater a try, but I have a fear of red.

  3. I love look #1 - There isn't anything I don't like about it - including the frilly blouse. And those shoes with the red.... KILLER! Great job on all of the outfits. Merry Christmas!

  4. I like look #1 but honestly I think all of them are great! That coat is surprisingly versatile! I tried it on and I kind of looked like I had gained an extra 20 lbs! It was a no go, but I LOVE it on everyone else!

  6. I can't wait to "receive" my red Alice for Christmas (she's been in the house for two months, I've been good) and just ordered the P&S skirt on sale today so I can totally recreate that look.

The red definitely suits you compared with all the other colours I saw you try, happy christmas Sara and Alice :)

  7. I love doing this with new clothes - it really helps give you ways to wear it, and know if it'll work in your closet! I love what you did with Alice, especially look #1.

  8. OMG I'm so glad you did this!! I picked it up in red on the weekend and have been trying to figure out the best ways to style it!!

I've got casual day at work today so I'm pretty basic with AG skinny jeans, Steve Madden boots, Spumante tunic and that's it! Thanks for the other styling tips!!

PS this morning my friend said that since I wore this during the holidays, it is forever a "Christmas Sweater". I'm going to have to prove her wrong!

  9. Hi,
I just saw the comment from Louise. Is the Peppered and Striped skirt on sale? I just got one for full price yesterday.

    Please let me know.

    Thanks!

  10. I also love outfit #1 as I have both items in the same color. I would never thought to wear them together, but they look awesome!

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  11. Tien-I have a fear of red too when it comes in large doses (i.e. the Refined Cord Shirtdress), but I like that this coat can be balanced out by other colors on the legs/feet. It's also more of a cranberry red rather than an apple red, which I think looks better on me.

Louise-Can't wait to see how you style your Alice :) I don't think I would have been able to wait 2 days to open her, let alone 2 months! Glad you were able to score a Peppered and Striped Skirt on sale and can't wait to see how you style that one too!

LifeBegins@Thirty-I'm glad I was able to give you some ideas :) I don't agree with your friend at all about this being a "Christmas only" sweater. Yes it's red, so it fits in perfectly with the holiday season, but people wear red (and green) all year round. I say get as much wear out of it as you can before it starts getting warm again :)

Gen-Louise is actually from the UK, so I'm guessing it went on sale there recently. Maybe that means it will go on sale soon here? Keep your fingers crossed!

  12. I really like your outfits, but even more so, your shoes are soo adorable. Are they comfy?

  13. Nancy-Of all the shoes I wore, the black mary janes are the most comfortable. I can wear them 12+ hours and I still don't really even notice they're on. The red and brown shoes are also really comfortable, but I'm definitely ready to take them off when I get home from work! The mustard wedges are the ones I have a hardest time with. They are probably 4+ inches, so I try not to wear them to work too often. If I do, I wear them on days when I know I won't be walking around a lot :)
